Lesson 20:Was Free Land a Good Deal?
Students work in small groups to investigate the costs of taking up a homestead in the western United States shortly after the Homestead Act was passed in 1862. In whole class discussion, the student groups explain their choices, using economic reasoning. They also discuss the motives of the federal government in passing the Homestead Act.
