Lesson 10: Rising Living Standards in the New Nation
The students participate in a simulation that demonstrates an increase in productivity. They discuss ways in which productivity can be increased; then they learn how technology, exemplified by Eli Whitney's cotton gin (1793), increased productivity in cotton, which in turn had widespread effects on many aspects of American society early in the nineteenth century.
